How do I choose between round rose, square rose and backplate door handles?

The style of door handle you choose plays an essential part in shaping the overall appearance of a door.

  • Available in a wide range of lever designs
  • Concealed fixings for a neat, uncluttered appearance
  • Suitable for both modern and classic interiors

  • Clean, angular design for a sharp, contemporary look
  • Concealed fixings for a sleek finish
  • Well suited to modern and design-led homes
  • Compatible with standard latches, locks and thumb turns

Lever on Backplate: a more traditional statement, a classic choice that adds presence to the door

  • Lever handle on a rectangular backplate
  • Creates a centrepiece for your door
  • Ideal for period and traditional interiors
  • Covers existing holes or marks on older doors
  • Available in latch (non-locking), bathroom (privacy) and lock (key-operated) versions

Multi-Point Door Handles for uPVC and Composite Doors

Designed as a direct replacement for standard multi-point door handles on uPVC and composite doors, these handles offer an easy way to upgrade to a more decorative style. They allow you to coordinate your door hardware with your interior finishes, creating a cohesive look throughout your home.
Due to the wider backplate, a minimum of 50mm of flat surface area (stile width) is required to ensure a secure and accurate fit.

Choosing the Right Door Handles for Internal Doors

The function of your door hardware should be based on how the space is used. Each application requires a specific combination of handle and locking mechanism.

Non-locking doors (Passage doors)

Ideal for living areas such as kitchens, hallways and reception rooms.

  • Requires a lever handle and a tubular latch
  • Provides simple opening and closing without any locking function
  • Ensures smooth, everyday operation

Privacy doors (Bathrooms & bedrooms)

Suitable for spaces where privacy is needed but key locking is not required.

  • Requires a lever handle and either:
    • a bathroom lock, or
    • a separate bathroom bolt with thumb turn
  • Operated by a thumb turn on the inside
  • Emergency release on the outside for safety

Locking doors (Key-operated)

For rooms that require secure access, such as home offices or storage areas.

  • Requires a lever handle and a sash lock (key-operated)
  • Provides a higher level of security
  • Allows locking and unlocking with a key from either side

Mechanical Warranty

Each handle is backed by a 10-year mechanical warranty, providing confidence in long-term performance and reliability.

FAQs

Why Choose Heritage Brass Solid Brass Handles?

Heritage Brass is a brand of M.Marcus Ltd, established in 1940. With over 80 years of manufacturing experience, Heritage Brass offers a vast selection of solid brass products across many finishes.

Solid brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, prized for centuries in architectural ironmongery for its strength and longevity. It feels substantial in use and performs well in high-traffic areas.

Are These Door Handles Suitable for My Door?

Designed for standard internal doors between 35–44mm thick, these handles are suitable for most UK residential applications.

Which Lock Do I Need?

The right lock depends on how each room is used:

Living rooms, hallways and kitchens

  • Use a tubular latch. For lever on rose handles, the latch does not need bolt-through fixing holes as the handles fix above and below it. For lever on backplate handles, choose a lever latch backplate version.

Bedrooms, bathrooms and cloakrooms

  • For privacy locking from inside with emergency access from outside, use a bathroom lock or a tubular latch with a separate bathroom bolt operated by a thumb turn. For lever on rose, the lock must have bolt-through fixing holes. For lever on backplate, choose a lever bathroom backplate version — on long backplate models the thumb turn is integrated into the plate. A 60mm centre-to-centre spacing between the handle spindle and thumb-turn spindle is recommended for comfortable use.

Key-locking doors

  • Use a sash lock. For lever on rose, the sash lock must have bolt-through fixing holes. For lever on backplate, choose a lever lock version — on long backplate models the keyhole is integrated into the plate; on short backplate models add a matching keyhole escutcheon.

Are These Handles Suitable for Fire Doors?

Heritage Brass solid brass lever handles may be used on fire doors, provided they are compatible with the door's tested or certified specification and do not compromise its fire resistance.
Our handles feature solid brass levers and roses or backplates, with steel spindles and bolt-through or screw fixings, depending on the design.

Fire Door Thickness and Fixings
Fire doors are generally thicker than standard internal doors. FD30 doors are commonly 44mm thick, while FD60 doors are often 54mm.
Our standard fixings accommodate doors 35–44mm thick. For thicker doors up to 55mm, longer spindles or fixings may be available. Please call us on +44 (0)1384 247805 to discuss your requirements.

Checking Compatibility
Before installation, check with your fire door manufacturer or a qualified installer that your chosen handle and fixings are suitable and will not compromise the door's fire resistance. For commercial projects, consult a qualified architectural ironmongery specialist. Where specific insurance requirements apply, check with your insurer.

What is included in the box?

Each set is supplied as a matched pair of handles and includes:

  • Standard Spindle
  • Matching Screws and Fixings
  • Lever on rose handles have bolt-through fixing system for a secure and stable installation

What Are Sprung Door Handles and Will the Lever Drop Over Time?

A sprung handle has a spring mechanism inside. Our handles are double sprung — with a spring on each side. This prevents the lever from drooping over time and ensures it returns smoothly to its original position after every use. The springs are built to last, backed by our 10-year guarantee on the mechanism.

How Are the Handles Fixed to the Door?

  • Lever on rose handles use bolt-through fixing — screws pass through the door connecting the two handles for a strong, stable installation. The rose conceals the fixings once fitted.
  • Lever on backplate handles are fixed to the door using wood screws through the face of the backplate.
  • For bathroom locks and sash locks, check that the lock has fixing holes that align with the backplate centres before ordering.
  • For tubular latches used with lever on rose handles, bolt-through holes in the latch are not required as the handles fix above and below it.

What Height Should I Fit Door Handles?

1000mm from the floor is the standard recommended height for most internal doors. For taller doors or personal preference, anywhere between 990mm and 1050mm works well.

Are the Handles Handed, or Does It Matter Which Side of the Door They Go On?

These handles are non-handed. They can be fitted to either side of the door and work in both directions. No left or right version is required.

Are the Handles Good for Bathrooms?

Yes. Solid brass can endure normal bathroom exposure including everyday humidity and moisture. However, moisture should not be left on the handles for prolonged periods as this can affect the finish over time.

Are the Screws and Fixings Visible?

For lever on rose handles, fixings are concealed within the rose or backplate once fitted and are not visible in normal use. Lever on backplate handles are fixed to the door using wood screws through the face of the backplate.

How Do I Maintain the Finish?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth and keep the handle dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals as these can damage the finish or lacquer.
